Inventory number 512
Original title: SCARDONA
Publishing year: 1713
Place of publishing and publisher: Padova
Format: 17,5 x 31 cm
Technique: Copper engraving

Italian cartographer Lasor a Varea (Raffaello Savonarola) published this copper engraved view of Skradin in his work “Universus Terrarum Orbis Scriptorum Calamo Delienatus” in 1713. Along the Latin text above the map, below the lower edge of the view is the text attributing the map to the original in which it was published: Univers. Terr. Orbis Tom II, then ppp 2 as probable pagination and record 9. mil. The view is a well-illustrated fortified Ottoman Skradin, with single buildings and solid walls facing the sea. The crescent moon symbol adorns roof peaks of prominent buildings. The same symbols are found in some settlements in the interior. Ottomans’ presence and devastation were an important warning to the Venetians, and they continually mapped the symbols of their authority on Skradin as an important transport node. There are many boats in the port. The remains of the castle are on the hill in the background. The title is below the top edge of the map. Concatenated orographic content in the interior is shown by schematic molehills. As a result of the using older templates, among which he particularly relied on Martin Rota's work, this Savonarola's work is extremely similar to Franco's view of the same name from 1579 and Rosaccio's one from 1606.
