As Sanson's disciple, Pierre du Val was often using Sanson's maps as his sources. It can be easily seen on the example of du Val's map of the Republic of Dubrovnik that completely copies Sanson's map of Dalmatia (ref. catalogue No. 39.). Due to the fact that the format of this map is smaller, du Val's version is additionally simplified, with reduced number of place names and the network of rivers completely omitted. The boundaries of the Republic of Dubrovnik designated in accordance with Sanson's model map are only partly accurate. The title is shown in the upper right corner of the map together with a mileage scale. The scale is in miles (Milliaria), in all probability the French ones.
