VAN DER BRUGGEN, JOHANN: MAP OF THE DUCHY OF CARNIOLIA

Van der Bruggen was a very active cartographer and publisher in Vienna and Augsburg. In Vienna, he created and published in 1737-39 "Parvus Atlas qui continent duas partes quatum prima pars refert Regnum Hungariae, in XIII tabula. Secunda pars, consistens in IX tabulis", but also the atlas "Tabulae XI. Repraesentantes Regnum Hungariae, cum adjecentibus Provinciis suis", which is much less known. Both atlases contain maps of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia, as well as Bosnia and Serbia. In 1740, Van der Bruggen moved to Augsburg, where he published the same "Parvus Atlas", but as a draftsman and a copper engraver appeared J. A. Pfeffel or even J. A. Pfeffel and C. Engelbrecht. The atlas has several editions, and one of them was ordered by the Society of Jesus. Apart from the signatures, the essential difference is that the two Vienna Atlases contain the year 1737 in the cartouche.
