THEUERKAUF, CHRISTIAN GOTTLOB HEINRICH: VIEW OF THE TOWN OF HVAR

This city view, made by Theuerkauf in 1885, was drawn on an earlier example by F. Thum. It was published in one copy of the illustrated newspaper “Land and Sea” (“Land und Meer") of 1869.  It shows the town of Hvar as it was in the mid 19th century. After the fall of a long Venetian and brief French rules, Hvar together with the whole of Dalmatia was ruled by the Hapsburg Monarchy, when the town developed into one of the principal Adriatic ports. In the fortress of Espanjol the Austrian standing forces were installed. Economic development of Hvar is reflected in its urban spreading outside the walls and around the church of St. Nicolas. While the residential parts of the town were gaining more and more importance, the fortresses were slowly falling into disuse. After the eastern part, the western part of the port was gradually built.
