This Mortier’s view shows the settlement of Polače (Benkovačke) in Dalmatia. Like other views by Mortier this one was also published in his atlas. It shows the fortification system of Polače, one of the fortresses sized by the Turks during the course of the 16th century, to return under Venetian rule after they retook it in 1684. The representation of the fortress of Polače is not quite accurate. The volume and height of the walls are largely oversized. The fortress consisted of tall defensive walls and one quadrangular tower. The most part of the settlement was built outside the walls.
