CASSAS, LOUIS FRANCOIS: VIEW OF THE DALMATIAN COAST BETWEEN TROGIR AND SPLIT
Inventory number 317
Original title: Vue generale des cotes da la Dalmatie, entre Trau et Spalatro, prise au milieu du Canal
Publishing year: 1802
Place of publishing and publisher: Paris
Format: 19,5 x 42,9 cm
Technique: Copper engraving
The sea view from "the middle of the canal", published in "Voyage pittoresque et historique ...", is more beautiful on the Cassas watercolour than on this view, but still features the typical Dalmatian contrast of the sea, the relatively lush vegetation and the rugged mountain massif in the background. The public at the time was particularly attracted by the contrast of the peaceful sea which boats sailed by and the potential danger of the inept mountains behind which there was an unknown, that is, the Ottoman Empire. The view was engraved by Chenu and finished by Nee.
