This engraving was also first issued in some of his "Theatrum Europeanum" editions, and it was based on the example provided by Martin Rota Kolunić that Merian could find in the Camocio's Isolario published in 1570. Merian's maps is drawn from a semi perspective view. The representation of Šibenik is shown in the foreground in the form of its simplified map image with the fortress of Saint Nikola guarding the town's port. The area lying inland from Šibenik is shown with full detail. The course of the river Krka and the key role fortifications in the defense system of Šibenik are also clearly presented. Along the coast are to be seen some islands making part of the archipelago of  Šibenik out of which Zlarin, Krapanj, Prvić and Murter to the west of them. The title is along the upper margin edge.

MERIAN, MATTHÄUS
MATTHÄUS MERIAN (1593-1650) a German topographer, graphic artist, and editor. He studied in Zürich, and worked in Frankfurt. His most famous work, "Theatrum Europeam" went through many editions between 1629 and 1718, and "Archeologica Cosmica" reissued as well several times during the period from 1638 to 1649.
